Former Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal (2012-2024)
Nicholas Addison Phillips became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal in 2012.
Lord Phillips was born in the United Kingdom in 1938. He graduated from King's College, Cambridge. He was called to the English Bar at the Middle Temple in 1962 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1978.
In 1987, Lord Phillips was appointed a Judge of the High Court (Queen's Bench Division). He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1995 and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1999. From 2000 to 2005, he served as Master of the Rolls and Head of Civil Justice. From 2005 to 2008, he served as Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. Having been Senior Law Lord since 2008, he was appointed the first President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in 2009, a post that he held until 2012. From 2012 to 2018, he was President of the Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre. He sits as an international arbitrator.
Lord Phillips was appointed Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter in 2011.
Lord Phillips was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2023.
