Former Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal (2021-2022)

Patrick Stewart Hodge, Lord Hodge, became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal in 2021.

Lord Hodge was born in Scotland in 1953. He read history at Cambridge University and law at Edinburgh University. He was called to the Scottish Bar in 1983 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1996.

Lord Hodge served part-time as a Judge of the Courts of Appeal in Jersey and Guernsey between 2000 and 2005. In 2005, he was appointed a Judge of the Court of Session. He was appointed to the Commercial Court in 2008 and became Principal Commercial and Companies Judge in 2011. While as Principal Commercial and Companies Judge he sat intermittently in the (appellate) Inner House. In 2013, Lord Hodge was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. He succeeded Lord Reed as Deputy President of the Supreme Court in 2020. He is also a member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

Lord Hodge was a part-time member of the Scottish Law Commission between 1997 and 2003 before he became a judge, and was also an active member of the United Kingdom delegation to the European Network of Councils of the Judiciary from 2008 to 2013.

Lord Hodge is an Honorary Professor of Stellenbosch University in South Africa and the East China University of Political Science and Law in China. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law in Germany.
