Former Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal (2018-2021)

Brenda Marjorie Hale became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal in 2018.

Lady Hale was born in the United Kingdom in 1945.  She studied at Girton College, University of Cambridge.  After graduation, she became an academic lawyer at the University of Manchester, eventually becoming a Professor.  She was also called to the English Bar at Gray’s Inn in 1969.  In 1984, she was appointed a member of the Law Commission for England and Wales.  She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1989.

In 1994, Lady Hale was appointed a High Court Judge of the Family Division.  In 1999, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal.  In 2004, she was appointed the first and only woman Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.  On the establishment of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in 2009, she became a Justice of the Supreme Court.  In 2013, she became Deputy President and, in 2017, President of the Supreme Court. She retired from that post in January 2020.
