Former Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal (1997-2002)

Sir Edward Somers became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal in 1997.

Sir Edward Somers was born in New Zealand in 1928. He obtained a BA and LLB from the University of Canterbury. He practised as a barrister and solicitor between 1952 and 1971, and solely as a barrister from 1971. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1973.

In 1974, Sir Edward Somers was appointed a Judge of the New Zealand Supreme Court. In 1981, he was appointed a Judge of the New Zealand Court of Appeal, where he served until 1990.

Sir Edward Somers was knighted in 1989. He died in 2002.
