Sir Derek Cons became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal in 1997.
Sir Derek Cons was born in the United Kingdom in 1928. He obtained an LLB from the University of Birmingham in 1952. He was called to the English Bar at Gray's Inn in 1953.
Sir Derek Cons joined the Hong Kong Judiciary as a Magistrate in 1955 and became Principal Magistrate in 1962. He was a Judge at the District Court from 1966 to 1972, a Puisne Judge from 1972 to 1976 and a Judge of the High Court from 1976 to 1980. He was appointed a Justice of Appeal in 1980 and served as a Vice President of the Court of Appeal from 1986 to 1993. He was appointed Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam in 1993 and a Justice of the Bermuda Court of Appeal in 1994. In 2003 he was appointed President of the Court of Appeal of Brunei and in the same year the His Majesty the Sultan gave him the honour of Dato Seri Paduka. He retired from the Court in 2006.
