The Honourable Mr Justice James Leslie Bain ALLSOP

Mr Justice Allsop became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal in 2024.

Mr Justice Allsop was born in Australia in 1953. He obtained a BA and an LLB from the University of Sydney. After working as an articled clerk in a commercial law firm and as the associate to the first Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, Sir Nigel Bowen, Mr Justice Allsop was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1981 and to the Western Australia Bar in 1983. He was appointed Senior Counsel in New South Wales in 1994 and Queen’s Counsel in Western Australia in 1998.

In 2001, Mr Justice Allsop was appointed as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia. He was the President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal from 2008 to 2013. From 2013 to 2023, he served as the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia.

Mr Justice Allsop also taught part time in the University of Sydney from 1980 to 2015, and in the University of Queensland from 2015 to 2018. He was a Member of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden and a Member of the Board of the Australian Maritime College as part of the University of Tasmania from 2008 to 2011. He is a Titulary Member of the Comité Maritime International; a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law; a Member of the American Law Institute; an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple; and a Patron of the Australian Insurance Law Association.

Mr Justice Allsop was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2023.
