The Honourable Mr Justice William Montague Charles GUMMOW

Mr Justice Gummow became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal in 2013.

Mr Justice Gummow was born in Australia in 1942. He obtained a BA and an LLM from the University of Sydney. After 10 years in practice as a solicitor, he was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1976. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1986.

In 1986, Mr Justice Gummow was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia. From 1995 to 2012, he served as a Justice of the High Court of Australia. Having lectured part-time at the University of Sydney for 30 years, he was appointed Professor of Law at the University of Sydney in 2013.

In 1975, with RP Meagher QC and JRF Lehane, Mr Justice Gummow published Equity: Doctrines and Remedies. With Meagher he edited four editions of Jacobs' Law of Trusts in Australia. His Clarendon Lectures delivered at Oxford in 1999 were published under the title Change and Continuity.

Mr Justice Gummow was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1997.
